Weak organic acids are not a problem, but as with all buffers, the conductivity must be controlled to about 0.2 S/m. We have used dilute solutions of acetic acid, trifluoracetic acid, and even inorganic but volatile acids including nitric and hydrochloric acid. The important factors are the conductivity and the lack of any nonvolatile substances except those that come from the sample analyte.
