Since you have experience in using it as a cleaner, go ahead and use it on your gun as a cleaner. It sure won’t hurt anything. My only caution would be that WD-40 is not a metal protector. It lacks the rust inhibitors that gun oils have. Once you clean your gun, wipe off all of the WD-40 and replace it with a light coat of gun oil. I don’t understand why you have carbon on your bolt. Even though you didn’t say that your gun was a .22 rimfire, I assume that is what you are shooting. I know that a .22 rimfire is a pretty dirty gun due to lead particles and unburned powder particles. This should come off easily with any nitro powder solvent.
