Can I use the same formatted file for a paperback or hard cover book?

The interior formatting of your manuscript can be used for either a paperback or hardcover edition of the book, as long as both versions are the same print size. (i.e. 6 x 9) The cover of the book does need to be sized individually for paperback and hardcover version.
