Can I use the internal DHCP server on the Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) in order to assign IP addresses to the Lightweight Access Points (LAPs)?
A. The controllers contain an internal DHCP server. This server is typically used in branch offices that do not already have a DHCP server. In order to access the DHCP service, click the Controller menu from the WLC GUI; then click the option Internal DHCP Server on the left-hand side of the page. For more information about how to configure DHCP scope on the WLC, refer to the Configuring DHCP section of the Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Configuration Guide, Release 5.1. The internal server provides DHCP addresses to wireless clients, LAPs, appliance-mode APs on the management interface, and DHCP requests that are relayed from LAPs. WLCs never offer addresses to devices upstream in the wired network. DHCP option 43 is not supported on the internal server, so the AP must use an alternative method to locate the management interface IP address of the controller, such as local subnet broadcast, DNS, Priming, or Over-the-air discovery. Note: WLC firmware versions before 4.0 do not support DH
