Can I use my SmartyPig Cash Rewards Card at hotels, restaurants or car rentals?
It depends on the merchant. When you use your SmartyPig Cash Rewards Card at any of these types of merchants or any other service-oriented merchant, it’s called a “pre-authorization.” That means the total amount due is unknown. The merchant has the right to authorize more than the transaction amount (i.e. an additional 20% at restaurants for a tip). The merchant also has the right to hold funds on your SmartyPig Cash Rewards Card until the funds have cleared. Once the funds clear, your SmartyPig Cash Rewards Card will reflect the actual purchase price. It can take up to 10 business days for holds to clear. In order to avoid these types of holds, we recommend you call hotels and rental car companies first to inquire about their prepaid card policy.
