You can definitely use clear nail polishes but they must be water-based ones if you want to put them *directly* onto polymer clay (the “enamel” or petroleum-solvent ones will eventually eat into polymer clay over time, leaving it sticky or worse). Sometimes that’s not indicated on the bottle, but any of them that can be used on acrylic nails are fine, and the one called Maybelline Wet Shine has been recommended in the past as safe but has a very glossy-wet look. Be aware though that fingernail polish is a lot more expensive by volume that some other clear finishes that are often used on polymer clay (glossy or not glossy). For example, clear gloss (water-based) polyurethane is excellent –and is sometimes repackaged in craft stores as “glaze” finish; that’s used by many clayers and will go a long long way. It can be purchased at hardware stores or Home Depot, etc., and the clayer’s favorite brand is called Varathane (indoor, gloss) and can be found in quart cans inexpensively if you lo
