Can I use broadband to make dialup internet connection?
Modems are on the phone lines. Normally when connecting to AOL through dial-up your computer is dialing through your modem and the phone lines to the modem at AOL. It is important to understand that broadband internet is NOT the same network as the modems are on. You CANNOT connect to an AOL modem through broadband. You can only connect to a modem by calling it with another modem, period. No exceptions. Modems are analog devices when talking to each other. Your computer only talkd digital to your braodband connection. However, you can encapsulate the SLIP/PPP (Serial Line Internet Protocol/point to point protocol) used by modems to talk to each other. For example you can create an encrypted SSH tunnel to another server (ostensibly it would be an AOL server if you were trying to connect there) and pipe the PPP through the tunnel creating a “dial-up” connection through a tunnel. For example you could use the SLIRP software which is an open source emulator for PPP. SLIRP essentially creat
