If not, the steam and water will spread the dried urine over a larger area, making the problem more difficult to deal with. Be aware that steam extraction cleaning typically leaves 30% of the water in the carpet and padding. This is very bad news, since the urine crystals remain un-dissolved and dispersed over a larger area. In extreme cases there can be a moist slurry running under the carpet/pad from wall to wall, all carrying fragrant crystals. It may not smell too bad once dry, but in moist or humid conditions the results can be stunning.
