Can i use baking soda instead of soda ash to tie dye something?
You can get soda ash at a pool supply store or in a hardware store that sells some pool supplies. Soda ash is sodium carbonate, whereas baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. THey both raise the alkalinity to help set dyes, but soda ash more so. Apparently, though, you can use baking soda as follows: http://www.dharmatrading.com/info/soda_s… “The reaction can also be aided with heat. Some tie-dyers have had success with using baking soda and microwaving their dyed articles. Since baking soda is a weaker alkali than Soda Ash, it must be accompanied by heat. Some people who are “chemically sensitive” choose to use this method. ” Hope this helps.
