But to actually buy an iPhone you have to sign up for a postpaid plan (there used to be a loophole to get around this but not any more because people were using the loophole to avoid the higher monthly charges) or obtain an iPhone some other way. A big downside to prepaid with the iPhone in the U.S. is the inability to use the data services of T-Mobile on the carrier=92s prepaid plans (on any phone, not just the iPhone). For prepaid data in the U.S. you can use Boost Mobile (very slow, but very cheap, but not GSM), AT&T goPhone (GSM), Virgin Mobile (CDMA), Verizon InPulse (CDMA), or PagePlus (CDMA). 7-11 SpeakOut also offers data, but they charge an incredibly high $50/MB.
