Can I use an array TileMap to create levels?

Yes, you can. It is theoretically possible to use an array tilemap. However, Game Maker is set up to use rooms for the layout of levels and it is suspected that iterating through a 2D array for a tilemap would be very slow in Game Maker (keep in mind, we haven’t done tests to find out yet.
