YES API SL is the latest API designation, which became effective in 2000 meeting new 2001 and later model vehicle requirements. The American Petroleum Institute (API) created specifications for motor oils to meet starting with SA for vehicles made prior to 1930. With each performance improvement, the second letter is changed thus becoming: SB,SC,SD,SE,SF,SG,SH,SJ,SL. However, the latest designation can be used in older vehicles whose car manual advises to use performance requirements that were current at that time. All motor oil manufacturers must meet the latest API designation, if they want to use API licensed “donut” or ILSAC “starburst” on their labels, therefore, you will find API SL on the label of most motor oils for passenger cars and trucks.
