MIT discourages the use of bunsen burners inside biological safety cabinets. BSCs are not equipped with safety interlocks on the gas valves. If the gas is left on and the flame goes out, then explosive levels of gas could build-up inside the cabinet that a small spark (e.g. from turning the cabinet on) could ignite.
