Can I take the Urine Challenge Test or Be On the MercOut Program While Pregnant or Nursing?
DMPS has been tested for teratogenicity in mice, rats and rabbits. (Teratogenicity is the term used to describe the capability of producing malformation of a fetus.) In the studies, DMPS administration was continued during the animal pregnancy and lactation period. Teratogenicity study results revealed slightly smaller birth weight and no abnormalities in the offspring themselves. Despite these findings, we of course are practicing medicine at a time of unprecedented legal suits. So whether justified or not, any birth that is less than a perfect outcome while on MercOut would have severe ramifications and thus we, unfortunately, cannot advise taking the Urine Challenge Test or being on the MercOut Program while pregnant or nursing.
