Can I take my n.v.q. for painting /decorator on site and not have to go college?
NVQs are achieved through assessment and training. Assessment is normally through on-the-job observation and questioning. Candidates produce evidence to prove they have the competence to meet the NVQ standards. Assessors ‘sign-off’ units when the candidates are ready – the assessor tests candidates’ underpinning knowledge, understanding and work-based performance to make sure they can demonstrate competence in the workplace. There are many ways of assessing competence, including observation of the candidate’s work, questions and answers, production of work already done, statements from qualified colleagues etc. You’d discuss with your assessor how to achieve this – it’s all very flexible. It’s not essential to attend college, but sometimes this can help you gain the knowledge required. I’ve seen the records of one candidate from one of the smaller Scottish islands who was unable to attend college even if it were helpful – and he succeeded with flying colours.
