Can I take acai while taking other medication?
To date, we have not observed or had any reports of any drug-food interactions with acai. I base my conclusion on the lack of any reported and documented drug-food interactions — despite hundreds of thousands of servings having been consumed by our clients using almost all the drugs commonly prescribed. Some cancer chemotherapy drugs that depend — for their mode of action — on the production of free radicals to destroy tumors, could theoretically be adversely affected by the antioxidants in acai. However, because the benefits of chemotherapy patients using acai, it would be unwise to simply trust the Oncologist’s (cancer doctor’s) memory on the mode of action of any individual chemotherapy drug. Either ask your pharmacist to look up the mode of action of your drug, or look it up yourself in the Physician’s Desk Reference on the internet.
