Can I suspend a patient awaiting a matched corneal graft or a child awaiting a homograft?
DSCN 37/2003 stated “patients should not be suspended from the elective admission list if they are awaiting tissue but that they should be suspended if they are waiting for an organ transplant or unrelated bone marrow transplant only. Since the release of this DSCN further consideration has been given to homografts for children and to patients awaiting a matched cornea. This work concluded that it is acceptable to medically suspend a patient awaiting a matched cornea or for a child patient awaiting a homograft for the period in which the non-availability of a matched cornea or homograft is the only constraint to admission. The suspension should cease once availability is restored.
