Can I survive as a small software developer within a software patent regime?
Probably not. You will need an infrastructure comparable in size to your core development team to locate, eliminate and negotiate patented portions of your code. Most individual developers and the smaller development shops will not be able to afford this infrastructure. There is one school of thought that believes that no one except the largest software development houses will survive the software patent regime. Only those companies that have cross-patent protection with the Big 5 or 6 patent holders will be able to function.
