Can i surf in a Windsurf board?
It’d be GREAT fun to try but impossible to turn. The rails (edges of the board) on a widsurf board are completely different from those on a surfboard. Edges on a windsurf board then to be extremely thick with what is called a “chine” (hard edge) running a lot of the way along the base of the board, almost to the nose. Surfboards have a chine on the very tail, but the rails round off pretty quickly (unless you have a very high performance board). This means that a windsurf board has too much buoyancy in the rails to dig them into the water and turn the thing – it’s fine if you have the leverage of the sail but won’t work very well at all without it. A windsurf board would also be much too heavy – you can pick up most shortboard surfboards between your thumb and finger with no problem. It would be possible to catch a wave and go straight into the beach but it would be impossible to turn, surf properly and move along the wave. The fin setup and base shape would also cause problems with a
