Can I still apply to dental school with a low DAT score?
It depends how low the score is, in what section of the DAT you scored low, and what school you’re applying to. Many schools have a minimum requirement, usually in the 12-15 point range (out of 30). So if your score is higher than the minimum for that school, you can technically apply. However, the average score for students actually accepted into dental school is usually around 20 on all sections. That being said, many schools weigh the sections of the DAT differently, so that it is usually not as big a deal to score low on reading comprehension and natural sciences as it is for PAT or carving. Also, remember that your DAT scores are only part of your application: things like GPA and personal qualifications are also important in the selection process and can balance out lower DAT scores. A good rule of thumb is that, so long as you meet the minimum requirements, try applying anyway as you may be surprised.
