Unless you have a medical condition that prohibts you from working – no you cannot. Maternity leave is strictly for when the baby is born (and generally a couple of weeks prior to prepare). As far as I am aware (not sure if it’s the same for every state), but you are allowed up to 12 weeks total for job security (FMLA and you have to qualify for that – check with your employer if you are). Any time longer than that you can loose your job as your employer no longer has to hold your position for you. Those 12 weeks are not necessarily paid either. You need to check with your employers human resources department to see what their rules are.
