Can I stain / paint my kitchen cabinets darker without sanding them first?
You can paint them because the paint is a thin coat that stays on top of the wood. You cannot stain them without stripping the old finish and sanding because stain goes into the wood itself. I would use acrylic paint. It is durable and covers well. It comes in various finishes from high gloss to satin to flat.
