We do not suggest that you spend your day at port trying to get to Chichen Itza, as there is not enough time to really enjoy the site once you do finally get there. We are by no means saying it is not possible, just not satisfactory. From Cozumel: You would have to take the ferry across to Playa del Carmen on the mainland, approximately 40 minutes, and then go via Tulum to Coba to Valladolid to Piste, approximately 3 hours each way. Your other option would be to go north to Cancun, approximately 45 minutes, and take the toll highway to Piste, approximately 2 hours each way. Either way you go, you will arrive during the hottest part of the day and won’t have much time to see the site before you need to head back to Cozumel. If you are really interested in visiting a Mayan site, we really suggest that you go south from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, or even Coba.
