Can I save money by just refacing my cabinets?

The answer is, sometimes. If you plan to do much of the work yourself and you are not moving cabinets or changing the layout, you can usually save some money by just refacing your existing cabinets. If you are changing the layout or if many of the cabinets need to be rebuilt for any reason, you may be better off replacing the cabinets all together. Remember that the doors are the expensive part of the cabinet and that refinishing the faces is often very labor intensive. My suggestion would be to have your remodel bid both ways if this is something you are considering. Most companies provide free estimates and you would serve yourself well to know your options before ordering.
