Can I run the game at a lower resolution or turn off the extra animations in order to improve performance?

While you can’t change the game’s resolution, you may be able to get a modest speed improvement by turning off the animated backgrounds. You can do that by going into the Options screen, choosing “Configure Video,” and changing the Background setting.
