Take-home drugs, revenue code 253, are considered self-administered drugs and excluded from Medicare coverage. When possible, you should still be splitting items not covered by statute onto separate no payment claims. These claims use condition code 21 and all services on such claims must be submitted as non-covered. As with all claims billed with condition code 21, you should place specific remarks on your claim providing reason for denial.
