No, that’s not true. I don’t use any type of chemicals when cleaning it out – it can harm the fish. Use REALLY HOT water, and scrub really well. Rinse several times. You can keep the betta in there if you’d like – but keep in mind while a betta can survive in one of those, they thrive in a tank with a heater and filter at the very least. Personally, I only use those for quarantine tanks for new fish (to make sure they’re disease-free before adding to a community tank) or as a hospital tank for sick fish. I do NOT use them as a permanent residence. They’re simply not large enough. Just like any fish, the more room they have the better they’ll do. I have one in a 10 gallon community tank, and he is very happy in there. I have another one in a 25 gallon community tank, who is also very happy in there. They are MUCH more active in larger tanks where the temperature is right than in bowls and plastic boxes. While they can survive in those little containers, they will not thrive in there. Yo
