What you will have to do in this situation is leave the father’s section on the birth certificate blank. You can go to the records office to get the father’s name added for a small fee (because they will have to file it and re-issue the birth certificate). In California, the father has to sign the birth certificate too if he wants his name on it. If you are unmarried, he will have to sign a voluntary statement of paternity in order to sign the birth certificate. I didn’t want the father of my baby at the birth (because he cheated on me multiple times) and he didn’t get to sign the birth certificate.
