It’s a physics issue: If you set a boiling hot pot on a surface that is much cooler, regardless of the material, it doesn’t have enough time to disperse the heat fast enough, then any material can crack. A warm pot should be OK, but we always recommend using trivets some sort of place-mat to set your pots on.
