Can i put black and white oranda fish in a garden pond?
You can, but it is not often recommended. Why? Well, just look at how ornamental varieties of goldfish such as the ryukin, oranda, pearlscale, etc, swim. They are clumsy and awkward swimmers at best, struggling to keep up with the swifter, streamlined and well muscled cousins shubukins, comets, sarassas, and koi. This becomes a critical issue as their bright colors ofter entice passing predators to investigate, and their slow swimming makes them easy prey for wading birds, turtles, raccoons, cats, etc. If you do decide to attempt it, make sure you have a deep pond with steep sides, as well as ample hiding places below the water. If you do not currently have hiding places, you can use cuts of PVC pipe weighted down to the bottom or side-turned terra cotta pots. There are also hiding spots available commercially that are essentially black tunnels to blend in with pond liners when submerged. You may also wish to string bits of cord (string, twine, or other visible wires) across your pond
