I have to disagree with Nick – regardless of if you list people as references your potential employer is always free to call your previous employer. I had this done to me when I was looking to take an additional part time job through the summer – and it’s a good thing my current boss decided to be professional about it. A lesser person would have gotten angry that it looked like I was quitting and given a negative reference. I was surprised when I told her about the additional job but she said she’s seen a number of companies do it and she too had done it before. No one asked me if it was ok – they just called the company I worked for and asked to speak to a manager. Generally people don’t want to go on the record as saying horrible things about anyone (especially in the US where you could be held liable), so unless you were a poor employee all along and they have substantial evidence of bad behaviour, they will probably give you an ok reference. It’s up to you if you want to take that
