A. Generally common law allows you to cut back overhanging branches to the boundary line of your property but this is not necessarily what is good for the balance, shape and health of the tree. It is better to have a talk to your neighbour (with us if appropriate) and reach a mutual agreement on what needs to be done for the look and benefit of the tree (also maintains good relations with your neighbours). If your neighbour’s trees are protected then LPA consent will be needed even for minor works.
