A disk problem might cause this. Reboot the computer into “Safe Mode with Command Prompt” by holding down the F8 key when you turn the power on. When you get to a prompt, enter the command CHKDSK /R That will scan your disk for errors and recover any bad sectors, if it finds them. If your hardware is OK, the only thing I know of that can do this, aside from some piece of malicious software, is a Group Policy Object. You would have this running on your machine if you were in a corporate environment, joined to a domain. The network administrator logs in to your machine periodically and messes with your settings. If this situation does not apply to you, we need to look at your startup processes and shut down anything that might be causing the problem. Click Start, select Run, and enter the command msconfig.
