You could look at it as being about choices. We all face choices all the time in life. Every day. When you choose one thing, there are losses. You lose the opportunities associated with the other choice. You have to give something up (the road not taken) to go on with your life and get what you want (the road taken). When we are making choices, decisions, we try to look as far as we can down the paths or roads we are choosing between. But there is usually not a clear indication of which choice is better. Which is why the character writing the poem was stopped by this choice. The options were just about equal. It was a tough decision.
