can i play my .avi movies on my dish dvr using the USB port and external hard drive?
The files on the external drive will be encrypted by the dvr or the entire drive will become locked with an encryption key, or both. Also the files will most likely be in some proprietary format. It would require a lot of work to do which is why it hasn’t been done. The files would have to be rencoded into the format which is time consuming. It’s easier just to burn a cd. The best option for watching avi on the tv is to either build a HTPC or use an Xbox to stream the video over a network. Portable video players will output to a TV also.
