But be prepared, the vet may not do a nail trim without seeing the hamster for an exam. By law, all vets must do an initial exam before treating any animal, even if it’s just a nail trim. And the exam fees are the same price as for a cat or dog. Just because the animal is small, doesn’t make their exam less costly. The reason for this is, if the vet or tech were to trim your hamsters nails, and the hamster were to die from a unseen problem, they would be liable. Your hamster should also have it’s mouth checked, which would be part of the exam. After the initial exam, they would be able to trim your hamsters nails any time it needed it for a minimal fee.
