Can I pass around a roster in class for the students to “sign-in” or verify attendance?

0

It depends. While the sharing of a roster within a class section is considered allowable because anyone present could discern another’s name, the placing of what is Non Directory Information (such as an ID number) on the roster sheet is not allowable. FERPA allows only “Directory Information” to be published or otherwise shared. At KU, our Student Records policy may be found at www.vpss.ku.edu/records.shtml (or linkable through the Privacy Office webpage) and it provides the KU definition of Directory Information. However, a student may have a “Hold” placed on their Directory Information/Student information through the University Registrar due either to personal preference or personal safety. Thus, it is important to check with the University Registrar or the KU Privacy Office to discuss use of rosters or student information.
