Can i paint over water based paint with laquer?

Oil can go over water, water can not go over oil. Acrylic is a water based product so any oil or other water based finish should work. Lacquer would not be my first choice. I would go with polyurethane (one of the strongest clear finishes) if it will be used heavily, children or pets, etc… But poly can give a plastic look that many people do not like. There are several different poly products so be sure to read the information on the can before deciding. One of my favorite finishes is Shellac. It is very easy to apply, easy to repair (another problem with poly or lacquer) and will give the piece more warmth without looking like plastic. If it’s mainly the paint wearing through your concerned with, a paste wax would be sufficient. These are also easy to apply, reapply, and repair. Just wipe on,allow to dry as per the manufacturers instructions, then buff.
