Can i make a poison dart out of a daddy longlegs?
First of all, there are actually three kinds of creatures called daddy longlegs (sometimes GRANdaddy longlegs). The common name daddy longlegs is most often used to describe Opiliones, aka harvestmen. Opiliones are arachnids, but not spiders. They have no venom glands at all, and are absolutely not venomous. The nickname daddy longlegs may also refer to a crane fly, which is a true fly. Crane flies do not pose a threat, either. Sometimes, the name daddy longlegs is used for another arachnid, but this one is an actual spider that looks similar to the harvestmen, except this one spins an actual web. These spiders are also called cellar spiders and are all over my house in the winter. They have about as much “venom” as any other house spider and can be handled most of the time without even being bitten. The claim that the daddy long legs is the most venomous ‘spider’ in the world is in fact a myth and anyone who believes it has been terribly misinformed.
