Can i lunge my 2.5yr old thorobred horse ?
Thoroughbreds are bred to mature very quickly, much faster than other breeds so typically a thoroughbred is broken to saddle as a yearling to race on the track as a two yr old. There is no reason you cant be riding him at this point, but allowing the horse a little more time to mature (which is what you have done) is preferable, his maturity is far better now to accept the training you want to start with him now. Ideally a round pen is nice to start a youngster…this is what I use and I find it great! However, lunging works as well although the horse is not as free as in the round pen. Once you have established the basic commands on the lunge or round pen, a fun thing to do to add variety is to do some free jumping (do this very sparingly though…one in a while only) Horses love to be challenged with lots of different and fun activities!
