Can I live outside the USA when I get a greencard?

NO, A greencard has been issued for you to permanently live in the USA. Which means you must spend the majority of every year living in the USA. Absences from the USA of more than 6 months but less than one year create an assumption that you intended to abandon your residence in the USA. Once you abandon you residence in the USA you lose the right to retain you greencard. Simply returning to the USA for 10 days or more every year is not enough to retain your greencard. In reality, US immigration may not catch you immediately but if they do you will be put in exclusion proceedings (the first step in cancelling your greencard). In some cases a re-entry permit can be issued to those greencard holders who wish to stay outside the USA for more than one year but less than two years.
