Yes and no, depending on your mobile phone. on most recent phones you can minimize aki-aki and let it run in the background so you’ll never miss an encounter. unfortunetly this is not possible on the iPhone / iPod touch right now. (a small hint though: while playing music you can keep aka-aki running and it won’t disconnect when you put your iPhone in your pocket with the screen locked!
