Is it a good idea to carry openly? While legal, if someone calls the police because they saw you carrying a gun, you may be stopped to allow the officer to verify that the gun is not stolen, that you are not a prohibited person, etc. If you are hiking in open country, and there are no other prohibitions against carrying a handgun (ie, National Parks), then it’s probably ok. If I am stopped by a police officer, am I required to inform him that I have a concealed handgun, or a handgun in the vehicle? While not required by NRS, it is still a very good idea to notify the police officer that you have a handgun, either on your person, or in your vehicle. Keep your hands visible, on the steering wheel of your vehicle, and tell the officer “Officer I have a permit to carry a concealed handgun, and I have the handgun with me” or “Officer, I have a legally owned handgun in the (glovebox, center console, under the seat. etc).
