Ceramic tile can be installed over the top of vinyl, providing that certain conditions are met. There are two main features of vinyl that may or may not prevent you from installing ceramic tile over its surface: The vinyl must be well attached to its substrate and the substrate must be composed of wood, pressboard or cement backer board. If you find that these conditions are not in place, then you will need to make adjustments to the floor in order to prepare it for ceramic tile.Vinyl ConditionThe vinyl onto which you are installing the tiles should be in good shape and still attached to the substrate beneath. There should not be any bubbles in the vinyl or areas that have separated from the wood beneath. Installing tile over conditions such as this will result in failure of the tile where the tiles break loose from the surface. The surface beneath the vinyl should be solid, such as wood, cement board or cement. Any other surfaces, such a particle board or press wood, are not acceptabl
