Not a good substrate at all as it allows moisture to lay under it and create damp spots that quickly lead to mold, fungus, scale rot and many other problems. It also can create hot spots over an undertank heater as it localizes the heat quickly, unlike aspen or other, more porous materials. When there is water or liquid waste, the material will spread all around under the gravel instead of being confined to one spot like aspen will do, making clean up much more difficult and creating an ideal medium for skin problems for the snake. I will not use gravel at all and haven’t used it in any snake cages for over 40 years.
