Can I keep direct connect number from Renagade Nextel to the Blackberry?

I would like to know if possible why it is not applicable to keep the same direct connect number from the Renagade Nextel to the Blackberry Nextel? Before I was able to keep my cell number and also have it as my direct number and as an upgrade not sure why I can’t keep the same number ex. 614-222-2222 as phone number and 614*222*2222 as the direct.
