Can I kasher (make kosher) crystal glasses and silver flatware? Dear Rabbi, I have some crystal glasses and silver flatware which were not used in a kosher home. Can they be kashered? I would appreciate a reply. Thanks, Marilyn Answer: Dear Marilyn, First of all, these kinds of questions are always directed to one’s own Rabbi who has the final and authoritative ruling. Secondly, in general I can tell you that flatware that is unjointed, e.g. knives most often, can be dipped in a larger pot of water that is at a rolling boil. Just be careful to stand back and not get burned. Knives, if jointed, can be kashered in this fashion as well without question if they haven’t been used for a period of time – most accept the concept of one year while others will accept cleaning and not using for a lesser period of time up to 24 hours, and then also boiled. If the knife can be boiled without harm then it is to be considered kashered. Glassware can be kashered either by putting into cold water, soak
