Can I just use PEAT to grow anything? Or must I mix it with other soils?
Peat is almost devoid of nutrients, so is only really good for growing plants such as bulbs where they don’t immediately need to take in nourishment, as their flower buds are pre-formed from growing in better soil by the bulb growers. Peat is moisture retentive, which can be helpful, but can also be very difficult to re-wet once it dries out, so is not always ideal in hot environments or summer time, as plants can then struggle to get enough water and may die. I’d look to make your own potting mix, perhaps with some sand/fine gravel, garden soil and something such as peat that’s moisture retentive. There are alternatives to peat, as the peat bogs that it comes from are under threat from over-extraction. The actual mix will partly depend on what you’re wanting to grow, seeds needing a finer mix than more mature plants. Start by making an equal mix of each constituent, and varying it by trial and error. Better still, look for a non-peat alternative that won’t deplete our natural peat bog
