It may be possible if you set up a peer to peer networking. I don’t know if your netbook is capable, I assume you have XP on that thing. What you want to do is to just hook a cat4 ethernet connector to the LAN/ethernet/internet connector on the netbook and then route that to the LAN or ethernet connector on your desktop. Then, try to set up a simple network on your desktop, connecting to the netbook. If you can set it up so that the desktop is the server and the netbook is the client (so to speak), you can then set up a file sharing using Windows Explorer, make sure that the DVD ROM drive on the desktop has a file share (see windows help on how to share devices). From the netbook side, then, you will use Windows Explorer and look at the network icon on the filesystem and then locate the local network icon, drill down until you get the name of the desktop and the shared devices.
