Can I homeschool my special needs child?
Yes, you may homeschool your special needs child. If your child has been identified as a special needs child you are required to indicate that on your CPI form. Before submitting your CPI form you will need to get permission from your local AEA.The rules state that the request for approval for placement under Competent Private Instruction by the parent or guardian may be presented to the special education director at any time during the calendar year. The director has 30 days to render a decision. The AEA director must give you a written decision explaining why your program will not meet the needs of your child. The director can approve the program with certain conditions or modifications, or he or she can deny approval. The decision is based on whether the program you choose is appropriate for the child given the individual disability. The decision cannot be based on lost revenues to the district. If you are not in agreement with the opinion, you may appeal it.
